9 Super Simple Ways to Make Your Dog Happy

Your dog brings you joy every day with their cuteness and unconditional love. It’s only fair that you return the favor! Luckily, making your dog happy isn’t hard at all—just a few small actions will brighten their day. Here are 9 super simple ways to keep your dog’s tail wagging:

1. Pay Attention to Them

Your dog craves your attention and it's fun to give it to them. Whether you're playing with your dog, training them or simply snuggling on the couch, they are soaking up that attention and loving every minute of it! If you have more than one dog, make sure each dog gets some one-on-one time with you. Whether it’s a solo walk, some cuddles or extra ear scratches, your dog wants to feel special. Even a few minutes of undivided attention means the world to them.

2. Play with Them

A short game of chase, fetch or tug will make your dog’s day! You don’t need a lot of time—just 5 to 10 minutes of play can fit into even the busiest of schedules. Try incorporating play into your routine to keep things fresh and fun. You may even be surprised at how much happier it makes you, too.

3. Notice Their Preferences

Take the time to notice what your dog loves best and not so much. My girl Shadow, for example, loves string cheese but doesn't love yak cheese, so that's what she gets. Does your dog enjoy watching the world go by through a window? If so, set them up a cozy spot near their favorite view (unless your dog has a barking problem, in that case check out this course). Create a cozy vantage point with a chair so they can comfortably enjoy their favorite view. This about what else your dog seems to enjoy most them brainstorm ways to provide more of that.

4. Train Them

Training isn’t just about discipline (in fact, it's not about discipline at all)—it’s about communication. You and your dog speak different languages. Training is a way to bridge the gap so you can communicate better with each other. Teach your dog basic manners, cool tricks or anything else that improves your life together. I taught my dog to let me sleep in longer when I ask for "5 more minutes." When done right, training is fun for both of you and a terrific way to get closer emotionally and deepen the bond you share. 5. Provide Enrichment

Dogs need mental stimulation just as much as physical exercise to be well. Try playing hide-and-seek with treats, or introduce them to a new type of toy. You can DIY a busy box with treats and any cardboard box or purchase a treat puzzle toy at most pet stores. Keeping your dog's brain engaged helps prevent boredom, which can lead to unwanted behaviors. It also help relieve stress and anxiety which many dogs today suffer from. If you think your dog has anxiety that can't be alleviated with enrichment activities, I'd love to help. Schedule a free dog training consultation.

6. Keep a Routine

Dogs thrive on routine. It help makes them feel safe and understand the passing of time. Knowing what to expect next throughout the day also helps reduce stress. Routine is more about sequence of events than exact times so think more in terms of "do this, then that" rather than things having to happen at specific times. That way you still get to sleep in on weekends if you want.

7. Exercise Regularly

Not surprisingly, exercise is vital for your dog’s health and happiness. Daily walks or runs, along with a balanced diet, help keep them fit and energetic. It's not all about the walks either, try out a new sport together, swim or take a class. The possibilities are endless! And, let’s be honest—getting outside and moving around is good for both of you! Check out some of the ideas in the post.

8. Reward Them

Positive reinforcement dog training is a fun, effective and human way to teach new behaviors to your dog that focuses on rewarding them for doing things you like. You and your dog get to learn together while having fun. Always let your dog know when they do something right by giving them a treat verbal praise or both! Using a happy tone of voice, encouraging words and a yummy treat boost your dog’s confidence and help them learn. Plus, praising your dog can instantly lift your mood after a long day.

9. Create a Safe Environment

Set your dog up for success by creating a home environment that minimizes temptation for misbehavior. For instance, my dog Jake loved to "steal" shoes, so I kept mine stored away to avoid any mishaps. Environmental management is one of the best ways to support good behavior in your dog. Set your dog up for successful decision making by minimizing their opportunities to make poor choices.

There are plenty of simple ways to make your dog happy and, by getting started with the nine in this post you'll ensure your dog’s happiness and well-being while getting even more enjoyment out of your life together.
